Pwllheli is the unofficial capital town of
the Llyn Peninsula. The town has the only weekly market on the peninsula,
which is held every Wednesday on Y Maes in the In the past, Pwllheli has been an important ship building centre, however, more recently it is mostly pleasure boats that it houses in it's impressive modern marina that is one of the finest in Britain, offering 24 hours access to the calm waters of Cardigan Bay. Around the marina there is a fine selection of boating facilities, from "park and launch" services to chandlery and boat clubs. Although Pwllheli is famous for it's marina, there are other recreational activities to do in the town. Pwllheli has one of many golf courses across the Llyn Peninsula and there is a small amusement park in the town centre. The town centre has a wide
variety of small shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, supermarkets and other
services. Pwllheli still bares many hallmarks of it's Victorian holiday
resort status. The many three story buildings and long promenade (which
has recently been revamped) go back to the 19th Century when the railway
brought many people from the large cities in western England to the town. Well worth a visit is
Penrallt, the small hill that abruptly juts up behind the town, which
offers excellent views of the town and Cardigan Bay. There is little
parking nearer the top, but it is only a short walk up Penlon Llyn
(straight on at the Woolworth's end of the high street), there is a path
that leads off to the right as you reach the peak of the road. Use the menu in the left hand column for more sections of the Pwllheli site. |
