Canolfan Iaith a Threftadaeth Cymru : Nant Gwrtheyrn
Nant Gwrtheyrn : Welsh Language and Heritage Centre

“The Nant” is located in a deep valley on the north coast of Llyn and was formerly a village to house miners working in the local quarry.

A steep drive down into the Nant gives some spectacular views across Caernarfon Bay to Holyhead and the closer headland of Porth Dinllaen. The centre is open for the public to explore all year around, only closing for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. There is plenty to see, do and appreciate in this peaceful village. The entrance has a friendly member of staff, who are very approachable and have excellent local knowledge.

Beyond this there is the chapel, with its interactive touch screen presentations and wall displays, the village has rows of what would have been miners houses and neatly managed green areas complete with telephone and post boxes. Not to mention the surrounding countryside, rising steeply up the side of Yr Eifl and dropping down to the sand and single beach.

You will notice that here many things are signposted in Welsh, sometimes with no English translations – making this an ideal location to start or boost your Cymraeg (Welsh) studies. There are 3, 5 and 12 day courses at various levels depending on how much Cymraeg you know before under taking the course (if any). There is a “courses and information” booklet available from the centre, detailing the courses that run and their content, length and difficulty.

The resources at the centre, and of course, the greatest resource of all, the local Welsh speaking population are all central to the informal teaching of Cymraeg at the centre and your studies are expected to expand further after attending a course at the Nant.

Perhaps you would like to join Ffrindiau’r Nant/Friends of the Nant – your chance to support the work the goes on at the centre, as part of the Nant Gwrtheyrn Trust? The trust runs the centre and is continually working to educate people about the fantastic language and heritage of Wales, and your help would be greatly appreciated.

The centre also offers educational courses and visits for schools, youth and other groups, as well as weddings, accommodation, conference facilities and other events, more details on which you can find on their website: www.nantgwrtheyrn.org
