Fishing at Porth Neigwl (Hell's Mouth)

Thanks to Tom at D & E Hughes Fishing Tackle Shop in Pwllheli for this article on fishing around the Llŷn Peninsula, which is, as you'll find out, some of the best in the country...

Fishing on the The Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales

The Llŷn Peninsula offers some of the best fishing to be had anywhere in the country and Pwllheli's beaches offer some of the best fishing in the area. Two long, sandy beaches run to the East from the harbour entrance and to the West from Gimblet Rock. Between the Rock and the Harbour entrance is a large area strewn with boulders, this is an excellent Bass mark when fished with spinners, plugs or a float fished bait.

The harbour channel itself fishes well for Flounder, Bass and Black Bream in the summer months and in recent years has seen an autumn run of Gilthead Bream. It can be fished either from the beach on its South side or from the sea wall on the Marina side although constant boat traffic can be a problem, so it is best fished in the early morning or late evening.

The beach running West from Gimblet produces Flounders, Dabs, Dogfish and Gurnard along its whole length and Rays may be found within a couple of hundred yards of the rock itself. Bass and Black Bream may be targeted in the area in front of the golf course. From June to the end of summer shoals of Mackerel may be found close enough to be caught from the shore.

Abererch beach runs East from the harbour in a wide arc as far as Pen-Y-Chain headland near the Hafan holiday complex. This is a shallow sand and shingle beach with patches of weedy stones below low water mark. These patches attract feeding fish, placing your bait near them or spinning over them can be very successful. All the usual species can be found along this beach, especially Doggies.

There are miles of coastline within a short drive of Pwllheli. From the sandy beaches of Black Rock and Dinas Dinlle in the East to the steep rocky ledges of Uwchmynydd West of Aberdaron. Almost any species of fish may be found from the hundreds of marks to be found around our coast.

Small boats maybe launched from Porthmadog, Cricieth, Pwllheli, Abersoch, Aberdaron, Morfa Nefyn and Trefor where there are numerous inshore fishing marks for anything from Dabs and Bream to Tope.
