Walk: Traeth Penllech
Map: Lleyn Peninsula West / Pen Llyn Ardal Orllewinol 253
Directions: On the B4417 heading towards Aberdaron from Nefyn, turn right at the first crossroads after the sign for Llangwnadl and follow this lane to another crossroads where you need to turn right again. About a mile along this lane you will see a large car park on your left where you park for this walk.
Say it!: Traeth Penllech: tr-aye-th penll*ech (ch as Scottish "Loch")
*place your tongue behind your top teeth and blow either side

High tide at Traeth Penllech

Traeth Penllech is a long bay on the north side of the peninsula, and allows you to really feel that you are away from it all. At high tide there is only a limited stretch of beach, but at low tide this opens up into a large expanse of sand.

The coastal path follows the cliffs along much of the bay.

From the car park turn left onto the country lane and almost immediately left into a small path through some trees. Proceed through three gates, roughly following the stream as it makes its way to the beach. The path then leads down onto the top of the beach. The sand here sometimes "squeaks" under your feet like the beach's more famous neighbour Porth Oer/Whistling Sands just up the coast.

Turn right when the tide is out and there are some very interesting rock formations and geology that can be explored along the bay. Turn left for a longer walk across the sand. To extend your walk into a large loop, take the path along the top of the cliffs from the small slipway that comes down onto the beach and walk across to Porth Colmon. From here you can walk the mile or so up the road to a crossroads, turn left and then in about another mile you will be back at the car park.
