Moel-y-Gest: moil-uh-guest
Porthmadog: as it looks |

Moel-y-Gest rises steeply above the town of Porthmadog in the
southeast of Llŷn. At only 262m this hill really does feel much higher
than it actually is and offers spectacular views across the town,
estuary and neighbouring mountains of Snowdonia, as well as along the
south coast of Llŷn.
From the lay-by, head up the hill, over a style and then a little
further up where the undergrowth gives way to loose slate on the
floor, head uphill to join another path and then turn up to the left
and then soon turn right. The path here is quite steep and a bit of
scrambling is needed to get up some of the rocks. Continue to follow
the path which eventually comes up a little valley and then onto the
ridge. The south-eastern tip of the ridge is to your left, but to
carry on the main walk, turn right and make your way along the ridge
to the trig point at the western end. Again, there may be some
scrambling required to get up a couple of rocks, but nothing too
severe. On paths through the heather, beware of rocks you can't see.
Once you have taken in the fantastic views, turn back along the ridge
and then back down the path you came up. Beware of the path where
there is loose slate as it is very slippy going down.
