Walk: Machroes & Abersoch
Map: Lleyn Peninsula West / Pen Llyn Ardal Orllewinol 253
Directions: From the centre of Abersoch head for Sarn Bach. Just through Sarn Bach, after the national speed limit signs turn left for Bwlchtocyn. Follow this road and the sign for the Porth Tocyn Hotel where you need to turn left. Continue past the housing estate to your left and on down the hill. Continue straight on into a dead end road and down the hill. At the bottom of the hill the road turns to the right and into the car park.
Say it!: Machroes: mach-royce (ch as in Scottish "Loch")
Abersoch: abersoch (ch as in Scottish "Loch")

Abersoch from Machroes

Machroes is a small hamlet below Bwlchtocyn at the far end of what is commonly known as Abersoch main beach. The east facing beaches of Abersoch are very sheltered from the elements by St. Tudwal's Islands and are heaving on any good summers day. Set behind the beach is Abersoch golf course.

The walk starts from the car park, where you need to turn left as you are looking at the sea and walk along the beach, over the groynes. The sand is very soft at the top of the beach, and it can be a little pebbly lower down. At low tide, a large flat expanse of sand is uncovered below the groynes and this is best for walking on, even though it may be a little wet in places! Walk along the beach and just before the beach ends at the Abersoch headland, turn up the beach and through a car park and along a small lane into the village centre, where you can stop for a drink or a bite to eat before returning along the beach! If you have dogs, you will need to turn off the beach at the concrete slipway during the summer. From here follow the road past the beach car park and up the steep road, turn right at the top and you are at the top of the High Street.
