Walk: Porth Oer & Mynydd Carreg
Map: Lleyn Peninsula West / Pen Llyn Ardal Orllewinol 253
Directions: From the B4413 from Pwllheli, turn right just after
Pen-y-Groeslon signposted Porth Oer/Whistling Sands. Follow this road and turn left at the triangle and after about half a mile, turn right onto the lane that runs to the beach, signposted Porth Oer, the car park is easy to see at the top of the lane.
Say it!: Porth Oer: porth oi-er
Mynydd Carreg: munuth carreg

Porth Oer with Mynydd Carreg beyond

There are only two places in Europe where the sand particles on the beach are the right shape for it to "squeak" under your feet, and one of those places is right here, Porth Oer, or as it is more often called, Whistling Sands.

There is a small shop and cafe on the beach here which is open during the summer months.

From the National Trust car park walk down the lane to the beach. Once you get to the beach, walk to the left and follow the path across the rocks. The path beyond this point can be rocky near the sea, and there is a safer path running along the top of the cliffs, so if you prefer, that is the easier route to take. (You can get onto this path from the car park at the beginning, it starts by the toilets).

Follow the coast until just after Dinas Bach (the first, and smaller of two rocks that stick out into the sea) and follow a path that turns up the hill to the left. Head for the top of the hill and the turret, crossing a track as you do so. From the turret, descend to the track and follow it to the country lane, which, if you turn left, takes you back to the car park at the start.
