Walk: Aber Dwyfor Estuary
Map: Lleyn Peninsula East / Pen Llyn Ardal Ddwreiniol 254
Directions: Park in the centre of Llanystumdwy, near the bridge. Llanystumdwy is about one and a half miles west of Criccieth, just off the A497.
Say it!: Aber: as it looks but roll the r
Dwyfor: dwe-vor
Llanystumdwy: ll*an-ust-um-dwe
*place your tongue behind your top teeth and blow either side

The lower stretches of the estuary at high tideThe Dwyfor Estuary is a very peaceful place, not a lot goes on here now. In times gone by ships would have used the deep channel at high tide to shelter, but there are no signs of this anymore. This is one of the few undeveloped estuaries on the peninsula. The channel proves difficult to cross, the best place to try is on the beach at low tide, don't try to cross when the tide is in!

From the centre of the village in Llanystumdwy, walk along the road towards Criccieth, away from the bridge on the other side from the church. Not long after walking down this road there is a public footpath on the right - turn here. This footpath then goes on to cross the main A497 road and goes up a driveway opposite signposted "Aberkin". Follow this track pas some buildings and over the railway line. The track ends and the path then goes over some fields to the banks of the estuary. Turn left to walk down the estuary to the sea. It is worth noting that the tide comes right up the river past the railway bridge further up so take care when crossing.

Please note: This a a modified version of a walk I have done and that I have since found was not a public right of way, and I have not completed this exact route yet myself - so some of the details may be a little hazy. I will do the walk myself and post any changes here when I have done so.
