There are plenty of places to start learning Welsh locally, but there are also many websites to help start you off, no matter where you live! Find out more on our
help for learners page.

Welsh/Cymraeg has a few sounds you wouldn't use in English. The most common are these:

LL - place the tip of the tongue behind your top teeth and blow

CH - sounds like the ch in the Scottish "loch", sound made in the back of the mouth

Otherwise, as you will see, pronunciation is actually easier than in English, it's all phonetic, so just say what you see. So once you've learnt how each letter sounds, it's not too bad! There are a few different sounds with vowels, but don't worry about these to start with - if you want to know more, use the link below.

Welsh Alphabet:

A, B, C, CH, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, NG, H, I, L, LL, M, N, O, P, PH, R, RH, S, T, TH, U, W, Y

And the Vowels:

A, E, I , O, U, W, Y

A full guide to pronunciation can be found here (including long and short vowel sounds) - click here...
