Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Llŷn - beauty worth celebrating!
The shear beauty of Llŷn is clear to see and there is no need for a special area to confirm this, however the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which covers around 25% of the peninsula's landmass offers more than just that.
The AONB and the unit that manage it are in place to protect what makes the area so special and hopefully keep it there for future generations.
On the 13th September 1956 Llŷn was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the following May 28th (1957) this was confirmed and the process of creating an AONB complete. To celebrate this, Llyn.info will be holding events during this period, with more information on the events page as and when it comes available.
Here's what the AONB's website has to say about Llŷn...
"Nowhere is far
from the sea on the long, low peninsula of Llyn, which is famous for the
unspoilt beauty of its coastline. The AONB, covering a quarter of the
peninsula, is largely coastal, but extends inland to take in the volcanic
domes which punctuate the plateau.
If you would like to contact our local AONB unit in Pwllheli their contact details can be found by clicking the link above to the AONB's website.
